Original abstract
To operate renewable-energy systems, there is a need to have efficient storage solutions to address the temporal mismatch between the variable generation and the demand of the load. This paper suggests a more advanced lithium-ion battery management system as a way of enhancing the performance of the renewable-energy storage in a solar-wind-commercial load system. A time-simulated framework of an hourly simulation was developed in Austin Texas using a normalized 1 MW commercial load profile, 1 MW photovoltaic generation, 1 MW wind generation and a 1 MW/4 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system. The experiment compared a traditional rule-based dispatch strategy with a state-of-the-art battery management system with efficiency-conscious operation, a protective state-of-charge window, derating power consumption based on temperature, and reserve preservation with short horizon. The annual dataset had 8,760 hourly observations with the total load demand of 3,853.72 MWh and the renewable generation of 3,127.67 MWh. The outcomes indicate that the suggested plan enhanced the efficiency of operations in terms of round-trip efficiency of 85.38 to 90.23 and annual battery energy losses of 44.00 MWh to 26.11 MWh. Final state of health improved to 99.112% and capacity decreased to 0.888%. However, the progressive approach decreased renewable curtailment of 365.04 MWh to 396.92 MWh and grid import of 1,133.89 MWh to 1,148.45 MWh, which represents a calculated trade-off between battery health maintenance and maximum renewable uptake. In general, the research shows that the high-performance Li-ion battery management can improve storage performance and decrease the stress of degradation of renewable-energy sources.
