Original abstract

South Africa’s shift to electric vehicles (EVs) remains slow due to high vehicle costs, limited charging infrastructure, and weak policy support. The country has fewer than 400 public charging stations, mostly concentrated in urban areas. With coal still dominating electricity generation, the environmental benefits of EVs are limited. This paper reviews the current state of EV adoption in South Africa and compares it with countries such as Norway, China, and the United States. It identifies policy, infrastructure, and energy integration gaps and calls for a unified national strategy. The study proposes expanding fast-charging networks, encouraging renewable-powered charging, strengthening public–private partnerships, and introducing incentives to promote wider EV use across the country. The goal is to reduce range anxiety, cut emissions, and make EVs practical under local conditions.
