Original abstract

To enhance power system regulation capability and photovoltaic (PV) energy accommodation under high penetration of renewable energy, a hybrid complementary system composed of conventional hydropower units, reversible pumped-storage units, and a photovoltaic power plant is developed in this study. Based on mathematical models of conventional hydropower operation, pumped-storage operation, and photovoltaic power generation, the operating characteristics and energy conversion mechanisms of each subsystem are systematically analyzed. Taking the Chunchangba hybrid pumped-storage hydropower station in Sichuan Province and a representative photovoltaic power plant as case studies, long-term historical operating data are employed to evaluate interannual variations, intra-annual distributions, and typical daily output characteristics of both stations, and to verify the complementarity of hydro–photovoltaic power outputs. The results indicate that the proposed hybrid pumped-storage hydro–photovoltaic complementary system effectively mitigates the randomness and volatility of photovoltaic intraday output, smooths the photovoltaic power output profile, and reduces the adverse impacts of grid connection on the power system. Moreover, the two power sources exhibit pronounced anti-seasonal complementarity between dry and wet periods, which contributes to suppressing photovoltaic output fluctuations and improving overall system operational stability. Therefore, the hybrid hydropower station and the selected photovoltaic power plant demonstrate strong complementarity in both intra-annual natural conditions and power output distributions. The findings provide practical engineering references for the construction of hybrid hydro–photovoltaic complementary systems and the optimal configuration of photovoltaic capacity.
