Original abstract

This study aimed to design and technically evaluate a hybrid solar–diesel system with battery storage for the electrification of an isolated rural community in the Quisapincha sector, Ecuador, considering local solar resource and energy demand conditions. A quantitative, descriptive, and applied approach was adopted, including solar resource characterization using NASA/POWER data, demand estimation based on electricity consumption records, and technical sizing of the system components. Subsequently, a HOMER Pro simulation was performed to compare the performance of a hybrid PV–diesel–battery system with a system based exclusively on diesel generation. The results showed that the hybrid system achieved a renewable fraction of 60.3 %, with photovoltaic generation of 6,977 kWh/year and diesel generation of 4,596 kWh/year. Compared with the diesel-only system, fuel consumption decreased from 7,531 L/year to 3,754 L/year, while CO₂ emissions decreased from 19,675 kg/year to 9,807 kg/year. In addition, both scenarios presented 0 % unmet load and 0 % capacity shortage. It is concluded that the proposed hybrid system represents a technically feasible alternative to reduce diesel dependence and improve the environmental performance of electricity supply in isolated rural communities.
