Original abstract

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate energy consumption and electrical load patterns in student residential buildings at a private Nigerian university with a view to identifying strategies for enhancing energy conservation practices in the hostels. Design/Methodology/Approach: This study employed a field survey approach, integrating a walk-through energy audit with data collection through a questionnaire and a checklist. Purposive and simple random sampling yielded 121 respondents, and 1,112 rooms were audited. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and simple linear regression. Research Limitation: The walk-through energy audit, by its nature, provides only a snapshot assessment of energy conditions at a specific point in time. It does not capture temporal variations in energy consumption patterns across different seasons, occupancy schedules, or operational periods. Findings: The findings revealed that electric kettles accounted for the highest daily energy cost (₦440,640), whereas electric fans recorded the lowest (₦9,000). The top-ranked energy strategy for enhancing conservation practices was awareness of energy auditing. Inferential analysis showed that electricity cost was the strongest predictor of efficiency strategy adoption. Practical Implication: This study recommends monitoring the frequency of electric kettle use in student hostels to reduce daily energy costs. Social Implication: Enhancing energy conservation practices in student hostels will help reduce energy consumption and associated costs across the university. Originality and Value: The study links student behaviour and energy audits, emphasising electricity cost and high-wattage appliances as key factors for targeted energy-saving interventions in university hostels.
