Abstract Despite the rapid increase in the use of plug-in solar devices in Germany, the adoption drivers remain insufficiently differentiated across consumer segments. The present study examines the impact of economic, technical, and ecological determinants on the adoption of the mini photovoltaic systems and compares the groups of owners ( N = 111), interested ( N = 110), and rejecters ( N = 139) with each other, using a PLS-MGA. The findings indicate that technical aspects tend to be less influential compared to sustainability-related factors, notably sustainability expectations and pro-environmental behaviour, which are significant drivers for the adoption. Conversely, performance expectancy and social influence are more pronounced among the group of rejecters. These insights imply that effective promotional strategies must concurrently enhance sustainability motivation and reduce technological scepticism.
