Original abstract

India has rapidly expanded its renewable energy capacity and climate-tech startup base since 2020, yet only a minority of green energy innovations convert into viable enterprises. Evidence suggests that roughly 15–25% of patented or publicly funded sustainable energy technologies reach meaningful commercialization globally, with similar or lower conversion rates in India. This paper examines the gap between research and market deployment in India's green energy sector and argues that business model innovation—especially recurring-revenue and hybrid pricing models—is as critical as technological innovation. Using recent literature on barriers to renewable energy adoption, green entrepreneurship, and early-stage climate-tech financing, the paper: (1) summarises key post-2020 technological advances, (2) analyses India-specific commercialization bottlenecks, (3) reviews the emerging policy and funding ecosystem for climate-tech startups, and (4) proposes practical business model structures that can self-fund climate R&D through product sales. The central claim is that aligning revenue with delivered climate impact, while leveraging India's evolving policy instruments, can significantly increase the proportion of green energy research that becomes sustainable business.
