Original abstract
Green technology, also known as sustainable or environmental technology, encompasses innovations and processes that utilize renewable resources while minimizing environmental impact. It plays a vital role in combating climate change, resource depletion, pollution, and ecosystem degradation. Among these innovations, solar power stands out as a transformative force in advancing environmental sustainability. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of green technology, renewable energy, and the importance of conserving natural resources. It focuses particularly on solar energy and its applications. A key highlight is the empanelment of solar power plants in Chandigarh, including North India’s largest floating solar photovoltaic power plant at Dhanas Lake, which generates 28 lakh units (kWh) annually. Notably, 106 government schools in Chandigarh have become energy self-reliant through solar power, with a combined capacity 196 of 6020 kWp. Similarly, the Model Central Jail now meets its entire energy demand through solar power with a capacity of 710 kWp. The chapter also explores the implementation of the Electric Vehicle Policy in Chandigarh and the broader benefits of solar adoption in the Union Territory. Finally, the future potential of green technology is discussed, offering readers insights into its growing relevance and encouraging further research in this vital area.
