Original abstract

This paper presents the Harambee Energy Framework (HEF), a community centered model for decentralized and sustainable energy provision in rural African contexts. The framework integrates modular solar and biogas hybrid generation units constructed from locally available materials, a lightweight blockchain based platform for peer to peer energy exchange, and cooperative capacity building programs that emphasize technical skills development and women’s economic participation. Using a simulated case study of a rural Kenyan village, the results indicate that the deployment of ten hybrid units, each serving approximately ten to fifteen households, increases average daily electricity access to six hours, reduces energy poverty by 40 percent, and decreases annual reliance on wood fuel and kerosene by an estimated twelve tons and fifteen hundred liters, respectively. The integrated biogas systems additionally generate organic fertilizer, contributing to a 15 percent increase in crop yields. Cooperative governance mechanisms supported by tokenized energy credits enable transparent cost sharing and system maintenance, while socio educational interventions support the formation of eight women led microenterprises, resulting in an average income increase of 30 percent among participants. By combining renewable energy technologies, digital coordination mechanisms, and inclusive governance structures, the Harambee Energy Framework demonstrates a scalable and replicable pathway toward self-reliant energy systems that enhance livelihoods and climate resilience in underserved rural communities.
