Original abstract
This study examines whether access to disaggregated electricity consumption information influences household energy use behavior. The analysis draws on monthly consumption data from approximately 20,000 Slovak households, collected between 2020 and 2022 using Bidgely’s nonintrusive load monitoring technology, which disaggregates total household electricity use into individual appliance-level components and delivers monthly consumption reports to users. Our study compares electricity consumption trends between: households receiving monthly disaggregated consumption reports (Group A) and a control group without such access (Group B). Consumers were segmented into three clusters based on age and annual electricity consumption using k-means clustering, and linear trend models were estimated separately for each cluster. Across all three clusters, households from Group A exhibited steeper downward consumption trends than those in the control group. However, none of the estimated differences reached statistical significance at conventional levels. While causal conclusions cannot be drawn, the consistent pattern across all clusters is compatible with the hypothesis that disaggregated feedback may support modest reductions in household electricity use. These findings contribute to the limited evidence based on the long-term behavioral effects of non-monetary feedback interventions in a Central European context and highlight the potential role of data-driven feedback tools in residential demand management.
