Original abstract

The increasing demand for sustainable and energy-efficient building technologies has accelerated the adoption of passive cooling and heating systems in modern construction practices. Among these technologies, the Earth Air Heat Exchanger (EAHE) system has emerged as an environmentally friendly and economically viable solution for reducing building energy consumption while enhancing indoor thermal comfort. The present study investigates the integration of EAHE technology in sustainable building construction through thermal analysis, system design evaluation, and performance assessment under varying climatic conditions. The study evaluates the influence of pipe dimensions, burial depth, soil thermal properties, airflow velocity, and ambient climatic variations on the cooling and heating performance of the EAHE system. A detailed building-integrated EAHE model was developed and analyzed using thermal performance indicators including temperature reduction, heat transfer efficiency, energy savings, and coefficient of performance (COP). Results demonstrated that the EAHE system achieved a maximum cooling effect of 14°C during peak summer conditions and provided heating gains up to 11°C during winter operation. The integrated EAHE system reduced building energy consumption by approximately 61.1%, decreased CO₂ emissions by 60.7%, and improved indoor thermal stability compared with conventional HVAC systems. Economic analysis indicated a payback period of approximately 3.98 years, confirming the techno-economic feasibility of EAHE implementation in sustainable buildings. The findings suggest that EAHE technology can significantly contribute toward green building development, carbon emission reduction, and long-term energy sustainability in the construction sector.
