Original abstract
Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption in Norway is accelerating, creating a growing stock of First End-of-Life (FEoL) Lithium-ion Batteries (LiBs). While unsuitable for traction use, these batteries retain significant capacity, making repurposing for stationary energy storage a promising circular strategy. This study explores Norwegian early-adopter household perspectives on repurposing LiBs in Energy Storage Systems (RLiB-ESS) through semi-structured interviews supported by user journey mapping. Findings reveal strong interest in RLiB-ESS for cost savings, sustainability, and backup power, but acceptance hinges on safety assurances, vendor credibility, transparent battery health monitoring, and perceived economic viability. Participants emphasise the importance of modularity for scalability and longevity, automation and digital technologies for convenience, and clear end-of-life logistics as critical design factors. Tensions emerge, amongst others, between green values versus price, vendor trust, cloud-based automation versus offline control, and ownership versus subscription models. . These insights indicate that technical feasibility alone is insufficient as mainstream adoption of RLiB-ESS requires user-centred design, robust trust-building measures, and aligned service and policy frameworks.
