Original abstract

Growing electricity demand and stringent environmental regulations have shifted investment toward renewable energy. Despite its potential, solar energy accounts for less than 4% of the global matrix, necessitating optimizations in installation efficiency and financial viability. While solar panels achieve 16%–24% efficiency, performance can be enhanced through solar trackers, which adjust orientation to maximize energy capture. This study proposes a decision-support framework utilizing the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method to determine the economic viability of tracker-based systems across various geographic coordinates. The methodology integrates multicriteria analysis with field validation, allowing for the adjustment of regional economic indices and technical yields. Results demonstrate that single-axis trackers become economically advantageous for capacities exceeding 250 kWp in Southern, Southeastern, and lower Midwestern Brazilian regions, and above 300 kWp in higher Midwestern, Northern, and Northeastern regions of Brazil. Furthermore, tracker-based installations can reduce land requirements by up to 40% compared to fixed structures. The integrated financial tool aligns with real-world market conditions, providing a robust instrument for investors to optimize photovoltaic plant design and resource allocation according to regional socioeconomic variations.
