Original abstract

The integrated management of food, energy, and water systems will be essential to meet the demands of increasing populations and the shift to renewable energy. Agrivoltaics presents an opportunity to address greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, rising production costs, land competition, and, in a more limited way, water utilisation. This article seeks to answer the question of the suitability of agrivoltaics as a multi-land-use system for the future based upon the perceived barriers and incentives in agricultural systems. The research includes (i) a systematic review of the available literature on agrivoltaics; (ii) the development of a set of future scenarios for agrivoltaics; and (iii) categorisation of uncertainties related to the adoption of agrivoltaics in Australia through roundtable focus groups, utilising the scenarios as a boundary object. The findings reveal that agrivoltaics might be economically feasible and have potential co-benefits in many cases. Pending on the regions, soils, and enterprise types, it may not be feasible in other regions. The global literature highlights examples of growing interest in agrivoltaic systems. The article identifies the need for agrivoltaic demonstration sites to generate meaningful information to make decisions. Additionally, a system of measurement for co-benefits can enable a metric to understand the wider benefit of multi-land-use systems.
