Abstract As global demand for renewable energy accelerates, the need for new engineering technologies to process materials is becoming increasingly pronounced. Thin film technologies are at the forefront of this advancement, with their capacity to develop flexible, high-efficiency, and lowcost photovoltaic devices. This article discusses the growing role of photonic curing (PC), an advanced thermal processing technique that utilises ultrafast high-energy pulsed light to anneal thin films without damaging the underlying layers. PC has the potential for broad applications in the competitive field of next-generation renewable energy technologies by overcoming challenges regarding material compatibility, scalability, and processing efficiency.
