Original abstract
This study examines the effect of solar photovoltaic distributed generation (PVDG) on power quality (PQ) in Covenant University&s;s distribution network. Reducing carbon emissions and less dependence on centralised energy sources are two advantages of injecting solar PVDG. However, it brings power quality challenges like reactive power imbalance, harmonic distortion, and voltage fluctuation that affect the stability and effectiveness of the network. This investigation examines five powerhouses on the Covenant University PQ characteristics using a Fluke 434 series II power analyser. IEEE PQ standards were used for comparison analysis to find disturbances in the distribution network. After that, Neplan software was used to include a solar PVDG model into the network and simulate its effect on PQ. The results show that the Power Quality issues in the distribution network are High Voltage THD on Neutral-to-Ground/ High Current THD in Neutral Line, high current /voltage crest factor, high line-to- line voltage imbalance Vn, high line-to-neutral voltage imbalance Vz, also, high active zero crossing point in terms of active power imbalance An, and high apparent neutral point regarding apparent power imbalance Az, and finally, high phase-to-phase current. However, a slight voltage imbalance and reverse power flow were introduced by the infusion of solar PVDG, which called for sophisticated control techniques. This work advances our knowledge of PQ challenges in distributed networks integrating renewable energy sources.
