Original abstract
Power quality improvement in long transmission lines has become an essential concern due to the increasing integration of renewable energy sources and nonlinear loads in modern grids. This paper proposes a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)-tuned Fractional Order Proportional–Integral (FOPI) controller integrated with a Photovoltaic-based Static Synchronous Compensator (PV-STATCOM) for dynamic reactive power compensation and harmonic suppression. The system uses a DC-DC boost converter with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) to harvest solar power efficiently. The proposed controller enhances dynamic voltage regulation, minimizes Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), and improves power factor in the transmission line. MATLAB/Simulink results validate that the PSO-tuned FOPI controller achieves superior transient response and harmonic suppression compared to conventional PI and fuzzy controllers, achieving a THD of 1.12% under variable load and irradiance conditions.
