Original abstract
In Kericho County, small-scale dairy farming plays a vital role in supporting rural livelihoods and supplying milk to local markets. Despite its importance, the sector continues to face numerous challenges and inefficiencies across the value chain. Although several studies have examined constraints and technological interventions, limited information exists on the systematic identification and prioritisation of innovations required to enhance its performance and sustainability. This study was conducted in Kericho County in order to identify and prioritise innovations along the value chain. Specifically, the study sought to: (i) identify existing and potential innovations across the different nodes of the value chain, and (ii) prioritise the identified innovations. The study was guided by a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, which facilitated active involvement of stakeholders. Qualitative data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), and stakeholder validation and prioritisation workshops. Quantitative data were generated using the Weighted Innovation Scoring Matrix (WISM). The sample size was determined using Yamane's formula. Purposive sampling was employed to select sub-counties and key informants, while simple random sampling was used to select wards and villages. Participants from villages were chosen using proportionate sampling followed by random sampling to ensure adequate representation. Qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis and constant content analysis, while quantitative data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27. Subsidised feed distribution, improved fodder varieties, milk collection hubs, branded milk packets, mobile milk markets, and small-pack milk products received the highest ranking. The findings are expected to provide evidence for informed decision-making by relevant bodies in the county. The study recommends that the county government, development partners, and private sector actors implement the highly ranked innovations to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the dairy value chain
