Original abstract
Purpose: To develop a prototype of a Pumped Storage Hydropower Plant (PSH) without a reversible pump-turbine, demonstrating its feasibility for small-scale renewable energy storage applications. Design/Methodology/Approach: The work done is based on an experimental setup. A laboratory-scale prototype of a pumped storage system was designed and constructed to simulate real-world operation. The system excludes a reversible pump-turbine set and instead uses a simplified mechanism to demonstrate energy storage and recovery. The study emphasises efficiency testing and performance evaluation, aligning with the requirements of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, for small hydropower development. Research Limitation: The study is restricted to a non-reversible prototype and small-scale setup. Results may not fully represent performance at utility-scale plants or under varying hydraulic conditions. Findings: The prototype demonstrates the practical feasibility of pumped storage hydropower as an effective energy storage solution. Efficiency and performance evaluations confirm that even simplified configurations can illustrate core operational principles and support training, research, and preliminary plant development. Practical Implication: The prototype provides an efficient platform for performance testing and evaluation of small hydropower systems, helping developers meet MNRE requirements and secure financial assistance. Social Implication: The adoption of small-scale pumped-storage plants can contribute to the reliable integration of renewable energy, rural electrification, and sustainable energy development in India.
