Original abstract

This chapter presents a concise, logically complete overview of quantum dots (QDs) as nanoscale materials that connect quantum-confined semiconductor physics with practical optoelectronic, photonic, energy, and biomedical technologies. It begins with quantum confinement, discrete electronic structure, exciton dynamics, surface states, and the role of size, composition, shape, and heterostructure design. It then summarizes colloidal synthesis, ligand engineering, core/shell passivation, stability control, and manufacturing considerations. On this basis, the chapter reviews QD integration in light-emitting diodes, lasers, photodetectors, photovoltaic devices, biomedical imaging and biosensing, and photonic information processing. The main conclusion is that QD performance is not determined by the nanocrystal core alone but by the coupled design of core, shell, surface ligands, film morphology, interfaces, and device architecture. Large-scale application requires three coordinated advances: reproducible synthesis and metrology, durable surface and interface passivation, and heterogeneous integration with silicon electronics, optical cavities, polymers, biological interfaces, and photonic platforms.
