Original abstract

This chapter provides an extensive examination of renewable energy, including solar, wind, geothermal, ocean, hydraulic, and biomass technologies. Renewable energy is energy that can significantly recover its capacity within a timeframe that meets human needs. This energy is harnessed from continuously occurring natural phenomena. Renewable energy plays an important role in increasing energy security, reducing fossil fuel use, and decreasing carbon dioxide emissions. In this chapter, renewable energy applications in power plants are described, such as photovoltaics and concentrated solar thermal power plants in solar energy applications; horizontal-axis and vertical-axis turbine power plants in wind energy applications; flash, binary cycle, and combined flash-binary plants in geothermal energy applications; tidal, wave, and thermal energy plants in ocean energy applications; pumped storage and run-of-river power plants in hydraulic energy applications; and fixed-bed, fluidized-bed combustion, and biomass gasification power plants in biomass energy applications.
