Original abstract
The three renewable energy technologies most rapidly transforming global electricity are solar photovoltaics, battery storage, and wind energy. Solar PV is now 41% cheaper than the lowest-cost fossil fuel alternative (IRENA, 2025), with a global average LCOE of $0.043/kWh — down 96% from 2010. Battery storage has collapsed in cost from $3,000/kWh in 2008 to $70/kWh in 2025 (BNEF, 2025) — a 97.7% decline that makes grid-scale renewable storage economically competitive with natural gas peakers for the first time. Wind energy reached 1,299 GW of global installed capacity by end of 2025 (GWEC, 2026), with onshore wind now the cheapest source of new electricity anywhere on earth at $0.034/kWh. Together, these three technologies have pushed renewables to 92.5% of all new global electricity capacity additions in 2024 and pushed clean energy’s share of global electricity above 40% for the first time in history.
