Original abstract

This article aims to apply the concept of sustainable development to the construction of a vertical community in the Iao Hon historic district of Macau, China. Based on field investigations, including interviews and questionnaires, the study identified significant potential to address the district’s existing environmental, social, and economic challenges through the development of a vertical community. In line with the principles of sustainable development, this research proposes a planning framework for a vertical community that optimizes both the functionality and environmental quality of the Iao Hon community while preserving its historic and cultural heritage. This approach includes the conservation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings, the enhancement of public spaces, and the active involvement of residents. The proposed vertical community plan seeks to enhance the district’s overall functionality while also fostering residents’ sense of belonging and well-being, all while safeguarding its rich history and culture.
