Original abstract
Due to the growing demand for electricity, developing nations like Bangladesh struggle to supply power to remote locations. Manpura Island in the Bhola district, for instance, significantly contributes to the agricultural and fishing industries but faces severe electricity shortages. Although the island’s demand is approximately 3 MW, the West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited (WZPDCL) provides only 0.5 MW from a diesel generator, available for just six hours nightly. This research aims to design, simulate, optimize, and analyze a 3.6 MW off-grid power system for Manpura Island, integrating a diesel generator and PV panels to offer an economical electricity solution. The primary objective is to achieve a lower Cost of Energy (COE) and a reduced Net Present Cost (NPC) for the island using HOMER Pro software. A technical analysis, performed using MATLAB/Simulink, evaluates system performance variations with radiation and temperature, assesses the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of output voltage and current waveforms, and determines overall system efficiency. The proposed system demonstrates a COE of 0.201 $/kWh and a total NPC of $36,124,300.00. The technical analysis shows that the combined AC load receives a consistent 3.17 MW. Furthermore, the load voltage is limited to a THD of 7.89%, and the load current to 1.63%. The system exhibits an overall efficiency (AC received power/DC generated power) of 88.05%. This study can serve as a guide for organizations or entities interested in developing a commercial power project on Manpura Island.
