Original abstract

The rapid advancement of solar energy technologies is crucial in addressing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) challenges and supporting sustainability. As the world moves towards a low-carbon economy, new and smart solar energy solutions are helping to use energy efficiently and support long-term investments. This chapter explores cutting-edge advancements in solar energy and their alignment with ESG principles and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It starts by outlining current developments in solar panels, like tandem solar cells and perovskite, which have attained efficiencies of above 30% and made solar electricity more economical, effective, and ecologically benign. Concentrated Solar Power with thermal storage ensures continuous energy generation, improving grid reliability. Artificial Intelligence-based forecasting of solar radiation availability and solar ray tracing technology have optimized energy output with over 90% accuracy. In addition, the integration of Internet of Things as infrastructure enables smart monitoring, control, and optimization of solar applications in real time. On the financial point, ESG-driven solar investments surpassed $300 billion in 2023, supported by green bonds and carbon credits. Public-Private Partnerships are accelerating solar adoption, though challenges remain in supply chain sustainability, material recycling, and equitable financing. Overall, the present chapter highlights solar innovations’ transformative role in creating a sustainable and low-carbon future.
